Success at the graduation ceremony for medical students

In December 2025, the DR Bolavis Foundation was deeply honored to be invited as one of the sponsors for the Faculty of Health Sciences oath taking ceremony. This landmark event marked the first of many invitations the foundation is set to receive as we grow our impact. We were privileged to contribute to the recognition of healthcare professionals who achieved academic excellence, celebrating their dedication as they step into their vital roles in the medical community.

The origin of the annual award-giving ceremony

Dr Teffo's passion for recognizing her mentees' achievements stems from her own transformative experiences as a student. As an Occupational Therapy student at MEDUNSA and a high school learner at Tlakale Mashashane Commercial High School, she was inspired by the power of awards to motivate and affirm excellence. Recalling the pride and motivation she felt upon receiving her own awards, Dr Teffo was struck by the absence of a similar tradition in the University of Limpopo's School of Medicine.

This realization sparked a determination to fill the gap. When her proposal to establish awards for students was met with the suggestion that it would be better led by someone from the School of Medicine, Dr Teffo knew she was the catalyst for change. Upon graduating as a medical doctor, she turned her vision into reality, inaugurating the annual award-giving ceremony – a heartfelt tribute to her mentees' hard work and a testament to her own enduring commitment to nurturing excellence.

Reflecting on the first annual award-giving ceremony

Dr Teffo's initial vision for the award-giving ceremony held on the 5 April 2025 was humble – a simple gathering to recognise her mentees' achievements. However, the University of Limpopo's management team took the reins, transforming the event into a spectacular celebration that exceeded Dr Teffo's wildest expectations! Thanks to the stellar efforts of the Alumni and Convocation Centre and the Marketing and Communication department, the inaugural ceremony was a beautifully orchestrated affair.

The overwhelmingly positive response from mentees, coupled with the presence of esteemed senior doctors, healthcare professionals, and academics, made the event truly unforgettable. To this day, Dr Teffo still can't believe the magic that unfolded – a testament to the power of teamwork and vision

The inaugural Dr Bolavis Foundation award-giving ceremony set the stage for recognizing outstanding academic achievement, honouring 50 exceptional students for their unwavering dedication to excellence.

Dr Teffo's personal experience of navigating the challenges of a supplementary exam illuminated a profound truth: true success is not solely defined by triumph, but by the courage to rise from the ashes of adversity. This epiphany inspired the Dr Bolavis Foundation to introduce the prestigious RISING STAR awards category, a beacon of hope for those who have defied the odds and refused to be defined by their circumstances. This coveted recognition celebrates the indomitable spirit of students who have confronted hardship head-on and emerged stronger, their determination and perseverance an inspiration to all.

Furthermore, one outstanding student will be honoured as the MOST IMPROVED, a testament to the transformative power of hard work and resilience.

As we mark a decade of academic excellence, innovation, and community impact, the Dr Bolavis Foundation is thrilled to join forces with the esteemed School of Medicine at the University of Limpopo to celebrate its 10th anniversary!

This momentous occasion also marks the official launch of the Dr Bolavis Foundation, solidifying our commitment to empowering future healthcare leaders and driving positive change in our communities.

Every aspect of this extraordinary event has been meticulously planned and formally approved by the School of Medicine and University management at large, ensuring an unforgettable experience that promises to inspire, motivate, and leave a lasting impression on all who attend.

This is more than just an event – it's a celebration of excellence, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of greatness. You are cordially invited to join us for an unforgettable day of inspiration, recognition, and jubilation. BE THERE, OR BE TOLD!
